When it comes to fat, the stomach gets a bad rap. Sure, we call that stubborn fat that accumulates around the midriff belly fat, but it’s really the abdomen we’re talking about. And that fat can be particularly stubborn to get rid of – or to keep from forming – as we get older.

“As we age our metabolism slows down and we begin to lose muscle mass,” said Fitness Director Marianne Grossman. “Particularly in the core, or trunk of the body, which includes the abs, glutes and hips.”

With the loss of muscle mass, those areas begin storing extra fat, and as anyone who has ever tried to work it off knows, it can be very difficult to lose.
